It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, aunt, and great aunt, Katherine “Kitty” Anne Connell, on July 30, 2023 at the age of 61. Kitty was born on July 14, 1961 in Miramichi, New Brunswick, the youngest of seven children of Frank and Lourdes Connell. She lived a life of purpose, passion, and selflessness, touching countless lives through her dedication to nursing and devotion to family. Though her loss leaves an immense void, her vivacious spirit and unwavering compassion will remain in our hearts always.
Even from a young age, Kitty felt drawn to the nursing profession. She graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1983, cherishing the comradery of her fellow “X-ringers.” Never one to stop striving, Kitty went on to earn a Master’s degree in Nursing from Dalhousie University in Halifax in 1997. Her educational accomplishments were merely stepping stones to a lifelong career she felt called to. Kitty held nursing positions in Fredericton, Edmonton, and various hospitals throughout Nova Scotia. She worked in diverse specialties from multi-organ transplant care to orthopedics, internal medicine, and tissue bank management. At the time of her passing, Kitty was proudly serving as the Halifax Infirmary Site Lead and C3 Director for the Central Zone health authority.
Kitty’s passion for caring for others was rivaled only by her love of family. She was a devoted sister to Karen Bray, Kora Hayward (Rick), Krista Connell (Dean Hirtle), and Keith Connell (Clara). She was a fun-loving aunt and great aunt to numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who will deeply feel her absence at family gatherings. Kitty treasured being Godmother to Mallory Legere (Jace) and took immense pride and joy in the accomplishments of all her loved ones. For Kitty, time spent with family brought the greatest delight. Holidays, Sunday family dinners, camping trips, and days at the beach held special meaning. Her family remembers her listening ear, sage advice, playful humor and caring spirit that nurtured each of them.

Kitty guided her staff with clarity of vision, empathy, and resolve even in the most difficult times. Kitty’s passing at just 61 years old is a devastating loss, both personally for her family and professionally for the healthcare community. She had so much more love left to give and so many more lives left to impact. Though the void left in Kitty’s absence can never truly be filled, her legacy will carry on through those she inspired. Herintegrity, courage, and humanity will continue lighting the way for healthcare workers following in her footsteps. While her caring hands can care for the sick no more, the seeds of compassion she planted will blossom into excellent care delivered with love.
Kitty’s family and friends will honor her beautiful life during visitation at Adams Funeral Home in Miramichi, New Brunswick on August 2, 2023 from 4-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 3, 2023 at 11am at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church, celebrated by Reverend Father Anthony Dass Papu. She will be laid to rest in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery. Donations in Kitty’s memory to Saint Patrick’s Buildings/Cemetery Fund would mean a great deal, as she was a longtime member of the parish.
Kitty’s absence leaves an immeasurable void in all our lives. Her warm smile, comforting hugs, and caring heart could brighten even the darkest days. As we grieve, we find solace in memories of her vibrancy and the way she fully embraced all that life offered.
